What does massage do?

First, massage helps to loosen muscles. All of the body’s operation comes from muscle movement; the ability to take in a breath of air, the actual pumping of the heart, and the digestion of your food. If any of these processes are undermined by tight or spasmed muscles, then health begins to falter. Massage helps the muscles to come back into balance with its opposing muscles to promote proper function.

Secondly, massage also assists in helping to facilitate the smooth movement of fluids in several different body systems. Massage moves blood to help with venous return in the cardiovascular system; it helps lymph circulate toward central nodes for flushing in the lymphatic system; it helps stimulate neurotransmitters and hormones to regulate the endocrine system; and, it helps to flush waste materials out of the muscular system.

Third, Massage helps to reduce recovery time after trauma and surgery (arguably the same thing) by bringing fresh blood (and therefore oxygen) and qi to the site of injury. Medically, massage is utilized to ease anxiety and depression through the mediation of serotonin levels and also helps relieve chronic pain by stimulating the release of endorphins.
